Guidelines
While everyone is welcome to participate, we have set up some guidelines.
Anyone can participate, published or unpublished. You can post anything, excerpts, shorts, blurbs, query letters. Anything!
- Your participant’s email must be received by 8PM est the FRIDAY before that month’s EM at excerptmonday@aol.com and include:
- Pen Name
- Blog POST address (set up a “draft” of the blog and it will tell you the address it will eventually publish at)
- Genre
- Heat level of the ENTIRE SITE (PG-13, R, NC-17)
- If this is your first time playing along, tell us how you heard of EM
- Yes/No to the monthly reminder email for readers and writers
- You will receive a reminder email Sunday night – It will also include the code for the banner and the wording for the header and footer.
- Links are then uploaded to the Excerpt Monday blog ON MONDAY
- Your link must be set to go live by 8:30 am EST— otherwise, we can’t tell which links are working and which need to be fixed. This has created reader frustration
- It is your responsibility to check your link on EM Monday morning to make sure it works. If it doesn’t not work, we will delete it at 9:15 EST if we don’t have an update
- Every participant must link back to that month’s EM post in their intro at the top and bottom of their post with the EM Banner. Each month, the reminder email will be sent to participants with the workding and code.
- Because many writers have tween and teen readers and are unable to link to warmer sites, anyone mislabeling their site may be deleted
- We define what is “offensive” and will not link to. That said, our decisions will be limited to things involving, but not limited to: rape, violence of any sort against children, and other “mel and bria offensive topics” (yeah, we know that’s a catchall)
Ways to NOT get on that month’s list:
- Miss the deadline
- Not send a POST specific link
- Be ranking your site a lower heat level than it is
How to participate in the side bar list:
The side bar is for people who are actively participating in EM. This means that you can email us and asked to be added to the sidebar list after 3 months of continual participation. If you do NOT participate for 3 consecutive CONSECUTIVE months, you will be removed from the list. If there is any reason that you’re asked to no longer particpate in EM, you will be removed from the list. Otherwise, you’re good

The post will go up in the morning. You can grab as many links as you’d like.
We ask that the top link say something like:
For all Excerpt Monday links, go HERE (with a link to the EM Post)
AND at least 5 additional posts.
I try to mix it up and will post people from the PG & PG-13 sites…remember, you’re rating your SITE not your post. We don’t want to surprise anyone when they get to the bottom of your EM post and decide you rock and keep reading with a heat level they aren’t prepared for

Excerpts can be whatever you want them to be. We’ve had blurbs, chapters, mid-book excerpts, WIP snippets. We even had someone have a vote on which first chapter the readers liked best…and she went on to win the Golden Heart (Yeah, I’m bragging about Jeannie again….have I mentioned I love that girl)

Can you give an example of a perfect post of how this is done?
Everyone’s posts look different. But, like we said, we do need to have a link to Excerpt Monday at the top. Your Excerpt should be next and then links
There really isn’t a perfect post as long as those three things happen in that order
I HIGHLY recommend linking to more than 5 people – the more you give, the more you get.
