Entanglements

Epiphany

Splintered: Sierra’s Legacy

As he took some deep shuddering breaths, his tears fell to the ground. His eyes were still blurry from crying as he turned away from the dryness of one of the small plant Ayla had been working with. The plant was a small spindly bit of green, wilted and off-colored. If he had continued looking, he would have seen that as his tears splashed on the ground next to the tiny fledgling, a brightness spread, a small ripple of light and with that ripple, a tiny healthy shoot of green shot up from the fragile diseased beginning, stretching to reach the sun. However, it quickly shriveled back into the root of the plant as the sun dried the tear on the ground and the bitterness of the soil came back and sucked the life from it. Even if he had seen this he would not have known what was happening, but hidden somewhere inside himself, there was a secret, known only to the Mother. As he turned back again to contemplate and stifle his tears, he saw the same small plant, discolored and forlorn, dying even as it sank its small root into the savage and bleached land, drawing the chemical laden nutrient through its leaves. As Dayol watched, it turned black and shriveled up. Little did he know, but that small spurt of growth had taken its last nourishment, and when it was gone, so was the plant. He felt a little like that plant, he felt as though he too might shrivel up without Ayla.
