Success Story: Ella Drake

When I started participating in Excerpt Monday (April 2009) I decided to
pull out a story that I didn’t have under submission and that I’d put aside
for a while. I got great comments, but that’s not all! I received a
request for a full based on that excerpt, which led to a sale to Cobblestone
Press for the short story Scent of Cin. Thanks Excerpt Monday!
Scent of Cin released in October and is available here,

Scent of Cin, an erotic
paranormal romance short story, now available from Cobblestone Press.

Half-demon Vedo resurrects the newly-dead Cinnamon Murphy, detective, bane
of the Hellions – and all woman. Vedo needs her to find his son, product of
a forced union with a powerful demoness, but Vedo gets more than he bargains
for. Once Cin is no longer a shade, her scent becomes a lure his Nephilim
nature can’t resist. Cin finds that being raised from the dead gives her
uncontrollable cravings for heat, especially for the hot man who needs her
help, a man she’s sworn to kill.

Scent of Cin is the 2008 novella winner of the Stroke of
Midnight Contest
, sponsored by Passionate Ink.

Available for purchase at Cobblestone Press.

Full Read EMs

We’ve been promising new and exciting things and here’s the first step!

Over the next few months we’ll be rolling out new ways to be involved at Excerpt Monday.

The first of these changes will be full free reads related to that holiday’s theme. Don’t worry, none of the dates fall on our standard EM day, so you can do a separate excerpt as well.

Here’s the Full Read EMs coming up:

Halloween – EM Monday, Oct 26th… Link due date, Friday, Oct 23r d
Holiday/New Year – EM Monday, Dec 21st….Link due date, Friday, Dec 18th
Valentine’s Day – EM Monday, Feb 22nd…Link due date, Friday, Feb 19th

We’re really excited about this one because they’re definitely going to be reader treats.  Readers will get to read whole stories from writers they’ve been following in snippets only with a twist of being holiday themed.  Do you have certain characters readers want more of?  This is the perfect opportunity to give your fans something they want and at the same time, gain new ones.

Below are some FAQs that will apply to these special dates. Check back for updates if you have any questions.

What length should Full Free EM reads be?
That’s completely up to you! How long do you need to tell your story? This is the opportunity to show what you’ve got in a complete story arc.

Do I have to do EM every month? If I just want to do the Full Free EMs is that okay?
Absolutely! Doing EM occasionally is definitely okay. We have people who put up snippets every month and some who only pop in occasionally. Some people join us only when they have new releases and want to show people the publisher’s excerpt. And a growing group of serial writers who add to their story every month.

What should my story be about?
Anything that ties in with the theme of that Full Free EM. Everyone views those times of the year differently and we want you to be creative in what you write.

Do they have to be Romances?
Nope. As a matter of fact, we have several writers already who don’t write romance. That’s a fast growing segment of our site. I’m looking forward to the person who can pull off a Valentine’s Day sci-fi horror comedy without a romance in it.

Do I have to link to other EMers?
No. We’ve completely changed that set up. Now EMers just put the wording and code to bounce back to EM at the top and bottom of their post. The info on how to do that goes out the Sunday evening before EM as a reminder. So much easier for all our writers and readers!

What rating should I give you?
We understand that several people write sweet snippets but their blog and/or site is hotter than that due to the genre they typically write in. We ask that everyone rate their ENTIRE SITE, not just that month’s EM. Why? We have several YA authors (and also we’re grabbing teen writers themselves already!) and want to make it very clear what links lead to which sites.

We’re already getting excited about these new EMs! If you have any questions we can answer for you, feel free to put them in the comments or direct them to us at excerptmonday@aol.com

Thanks!
Bria and Mel

Exciting Changes

This email went out to all past EMers…We’re really excited about the changes that will make all our participants day easier…and we even hint about some growing we plan on doing!

Dear Excerpt Monday’ers

If you’ve received this, it’s because you’ve participated with EM in the past. Don’t worry! This isn’t the beginning of us constantly sending you SPAM.

We do know that several people have stopped participating because of the confusion in the past abo ut links that don’t work being on your site and asking people to update those links last minute. Well, no longer!

The new guidelines for EM are faster, easier and cleaner – you spoke and we did our best to accommodate!

From now on, participants no longer need to deal with live links to other blogs. You can, of course, link to other people if you want, but it’s not part of the game – More on that below.

The set up will be very simple. You’ll still email us your link by noon Sunday EST, but instead of dealing with putting links in your blog and hoping they are correct and live, you’ll have a pre-designated header and footer.

HEADER:
Excerpt Monday Logo

Once a month, a bunch of authors get together and post excerpts from published books, contracted work or works in progress, and link to each other. You=2 0don’t have to be published to participate–just an writer with an excerpt you’d like to share. For more info on how to participate, head over to the Excerpt Monday site! or click on the banner above.

YOU’RE POST WITH YOUR EXCERPT HERE

FOOTER

“Links to other Excerpt Monday writers

Note: I have not personally screened these excerpts. Please heed the ratings and be aware that the links may contain material that is not typical of my site.
Excerpt Monday Logo

Because of the frustration to readers due to broken/wrong links and to make it less frustrating for participants to directly to Excerpt Monday itself. In addition, this also means that everyone gets the same amount of exposure. This doesn’t mean you can’t link to others. Feel free to grab live links off the EM site after it goes live Monday morning.

Everyone will still be responsible in making sure their link is correct on EM by 9:15 EST. We’ll be waiting to hear from anyone who needs to update their links. Any links not working will be taken down at that time.

We’re really hoping to win back the love and devotion (and make you sing that bad Nelson song in your head now that you’ve got the words there) of all our great writers. As EM expands and effects people’s careers, we’d love to have you all along. The future is looking bright as we g row in writers and readers. There’s more changes coming down the line as we plan how best to fulfill our mission to get writer’s work in front of readers SUCH AS AUTHOR SPOTLIGHTS AND A PAGE FOR YOUR SERIAL READS.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us directly.

Sincerely

Bria and Mel
